“When Beauty Fades, Will Your Future Stand?

Babs’ Story of Love, Loss, and Financial Redemption.”

In 2019, at Nairobi Hospital, I met Barbara—whom I later came to call Babs—while we were both taking our children for a clinic visit. We struck up a conversation, bonded over motherhood, and soon became close friends and prayer partners. Little did I know, our friendship would change the course of her life forever.
Babs was a strikingly beautiful and intelligent woman, but behind her captivating smile lay a story of resilience, love, and tough lessons about life’s unpredictability. She was a single mother to a beautiful baby girl, Tatiana, who was only nine months old when we met.

Babs’ Journey: From Struggles to Success

Babs was the firstborn in her family, and life had not been easy for her. She lost her father to a blood condition while in Grade 7, leaving her mother to raise her alone. Despite the financial struggles, her mother fought hard to educate her, eventually securing a well-wisher who paid for her high school.
After completing high school, Babs took up a job as a primary school teacher in her rural village, earning a meager salary of Ksh 8,000 per month. But she wanted more. She later moved to Nairobi and found work as a househelp.
The family she worked for treated her kindly and saw her potential. They enrolled her in a nearby computer college, hoping to equip her with better skills for the future.
That was when Babs met him—a wealthy, older man who took an interest in her. To her, he was a dream come true, a “sponsor” who could finally lift her out of the struggles of her past.
He moved her out of her househelp job, rented her a one-bedroom apartment, and enrolled her at a university to study Mass Communication. Babs was intelligent, driven, and knew how to carry herself. She became a top performer in her class, excelling in her studies while also capturing the attention of many with her beauty and confidence.
Her sponsor adored her, securing her a high-paying job in one of his associate organizations. With his support, she graduated with First Class Honors and immediately enrolled for her Master’s degree. Life was good.

A Price Too High: Love, Betrayal, and Harsh Realities

Babs and her sponsor’s relationship soon turned romantic. She became pregnant with his child, and he promised to take care of her and their daughter. He provided everything she needed, even building her mother a beautiful home.
However, soon after, she discovered the truth—he was already married with four children. She realized that, no matter how much he provided, she and her daughter would always be a secret. But she comforted herself with the fact that she had “nothing to lose.” Or so she thought.
As our friendship grew, I shared my knowledge of financial planning with her. I asked her the tough questions:
  • What if your sponsor finds someone younger and more beautiful?
  • What if he decides to stay faithful to his wife?
  • What if he stops supporting you and your child?
  • What if he dies?
  • Can you stand on your own if life changes suddenly?
These questions shook her. She had never truly considered them. After several deep conversations, she made a bold decision—she started an education policy for Tatiana of Ksh. 20,000/=. She also took out an individual a retirement plan, contributing Ksh 20,000 monthly. She wanted security, a future she could control, and a way to protect her daughter from the uncertainties of life.

The Unexpected Tragedy

***Then, the unthinkable happened***
While traveling back to Nairobi from her rural home, Babs was involved in a terrible accident. She was rushed to the ICU at Aga Khan Hospital, where she remained for six months. Afterward, she was transferred to the general ward, where she spent another year.
Her medical bills skyrocketed to Ksh 10.7 million.
Thankfully, she had medical insurance through her employer, covering Ksh 3 million inpatient and Ksh 100,000 outpatient. Her sponsor had also insured her, covering another Ksh 1 million inpatient and Ksh 50,000 outpatient. But even with these, the costs kept rising.
Her sponsor initially tried to help, rallying his friends to clear the remaining bills. But as the months passed, he started growing distant. Babs had changed—her physical beauty had faded due to the long hospital stay, and she was no longer the vibrant, confident woman he had once adored.
Then, he disappeared.
He stopped paying rent. Stopped answering her calls. Stopped visiting.
She was now alone. Unemployed. Disabled. And abandoned.

The Power of Financial Planning: A Safety Net in the Storm

When Babs was finally discharged, her life had completely changed. She and Tatiana moved back to her mother’s home in the village. She was devastated but still had one thing left—her financial plan.
Because she had taken an education policy, the insurance company paid her Ksh 2 million as a lump sum due to her disability. Even better, her monthly premiums were waived, but the policy remained active.
This single decision ensured that Tatiana’s education was secured.
Tatiana’s school fees were fully covered from junior secondary to senior secondary. By the time she completed Grade 12 last year, Babs never had to struggle to find school fees.
And the best part?
Her education policy matured in December and paid her Ksh 300,000. Next year (2026), she will receive another Ksh 300,000. In 2027 and 2028, she will receive Ksh 400,000 each year. In 2029 and 2030, she will receive Ksh 600,000 annually. And in 2031, she will receive her final maturity bonus of Kshs 2 million along with her retirement plan payout of Ksh 4.4 million.
In total, she will receive Ksh 6.4 million—money that will fund her daughter’s university education and give her a fresh start.

The Hard Truth: Beauty Fades, But Financial Security Lasts Forever

If Babs had not taken action, where would she be today?
Her story is a wake-up call.
Many young women rely on temporary financial security from wealthy lovers or sponsors, thinking that their beauty will always be enough. But what happens when life changes? What happens when they are abandoned, when their sponsor moves on, or when tragedy strikes?
If Babs had not secured an education policy and a retirement plan, her daughter’s future would have crumbled the moment her sponsor disappeared.
